Faqs

Q: Can I schedule a no-obligation meeting to see if we are a good fit for each other?

Yes, contact me for a free consultation.

Q: Do you have a sample of your work?

A: Yes, contact me for a work sample.

Q: Can you sample-edit part of my manuscript?

A: Yes, I charge a non-refundable flat fee of $50 (5-7 pages). If you hire me, the fee goes towards your deposit.

Q: What do I need to know about pricing and payment?

A: Click here to inform yourself on the industry standard for the rates of various types of editing.  I am offering a straightforward fee of $.05/word for developmental  and copy editing. I am offering the editorial assessment for $.015/word. As you can see from the link to the editorial freelancers association rate sheet, I am offering tremendous value by offering my services at this level. A 50% non-refundable deposit is due two weeks before I begin editing.

Q: What will the timeline look like?

A: It is a good idea to contact me at least month before you want me to begin editing your manuscript. The contract will have the start date and completion date. For developmental editing or copy editing, I need three weeks (21 calendar days; not including holidays). The timeline above assumes a manuscript length of 80,000 words or less.

Q: What is your process?

A: The descriptions I provide should give you a good idea of the order of work, in addition to what I do in each stage. The descriptions should be thought of as the focus of editing activity, not the strict boundaries of a particular type of editing. I do one pass with developmental and copyediting. If a section is extra rough or complex, I may do two passes through it.

Q: Can you do Developmental Editing and Copy Editing together

A: Generally, no.  It does not make sense for me to perform both of these types of edits simultaneously. If your manuscript is loaded with errors, it does not make sense to optimize your message to be more persuasive. However, if your manuscript is so error-free that I feel I can not justify charging you for developmental editing, I will give you a credit towards copy editing.

Q: Do you have any Special Skills or experiences?

A: Yes, I have a Master's degree in Communication. The two areas I have expertise in are Critical Thinking/Argumentation, and Persuasion Theory. Critical Thinking/Argumentation helps frame my analysis as a developmental editor. Knowledge of Persuasion Theory is useful in my analysis as a line editor.

Q: Do you offer proofreading services?

A: No, I am not offering those specific services at this time.

Q:Can you comment on any specific views you hold to?

A: Please ask if you have any specific concerns regarding my beliefs. For the sake of transparency, I can give you a few details: I am an active member of a Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. I am not a Five-point (or any sub-point) Calvinist. I am not an Arminian. I do not believe Penal Substitution (i.e., that God poured out wrath on Jesus Christ on the cross). I do not hold to Once-Saved-Always-Saved or its other iterations (e.g., Eternal Security).

Q: Do you treat my manuscript with Confidentiality?

A: Absolutely. I can sign the NDA that you provide, or we can use mine.

Q: What are you expecting of me?

A: Unless you are hiring me for an editorial assessment, you should have completed the first draft of your manuscript with several rounds of feedback and revisions. You are probably not ready to hire an editor if you have not:
  • Written a complete draft
  • Given the manuscript time to rest (at least a month)
  • Finished the first revisions
  • Had a critique partner (a fellow writer with complementary abilities) give you feedback
  • Finished the second round of revisions
  • Had several beta-readers give you feedback
  • Finished the third round of revisions

Q: What if My manuscript is not quite ready?

A: An Editorial Assessment may be the right service for you.
My Editorial Assessment includes:
Feedback on some of the  "Big Picture" elements mentioned in Developmental Editing:
  • Thesis
  • Overall content and organization
  • Chapter, sections, and sub-sections
  • "Top 10" (strongest elements)
  • "Bottom 10" (weakest elements)
  • Conclusion & calls-to-action
I will identify:
  • Elements that are missing
  • Bloated, irrelevant, and meandering sections
  • Missed opportunities to go further in the areas that are successful

Note: I provide an annotated manuscript, and a detailed revision strategy. The revision strategy includes suggestions for fixing the problems.
Note: This service may be useful to you if you have previously published your work and it was not well-received and/or it has had substantial criticism leveled against it.
